Pirarucu fish is commonly consumed in Brazil. The skin was discarded after consumption which created biological pollution. Osklen finds purpose in the skin and uses it as a noble material. The entire process is done in a socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable way.

The Pirarucu is one of the largest freshwater fishes on the planet. A native of the Amazon, it benefits the ecosystem and the communities that live off fishing, a non-predatory activity that is an important income source.


Making products out of materials that were otherwise discarded contributes to the local economies by creating jobs and income for hundreds of workers.


The Pirarucu does not undergo any genetic modifications and no hormones are used. The pollutant Chromium is not used during the dyeing process.




Pirarucu and Salmon skin products are made with sustainable practices anchored in the triple bottom line: economic, social and environmental. The Pirarucu skin that Osklen uses comes from the state of Rondonia in the Amazon. Since it is a protected species Osklen exclusively uses skins from sustainable farms which comply with IBAMA standards, the Brazilian government agency that inspects the environment. By sustainably farming Pirarucu through strictly regulated government control, it protects the species from becoming endangered. This in turn helps to stabilize the food supply and the local economy of the region. The size of the farms ranges from 2.5 to 5 acres. When compared to cattle farming, this generates lower CO2 emissions and reduces deforestation of the Amazon.

The farmers achieve 40% higher productivity than raising cattle in the same plot of land. Raising Pirarucu is an important source of supplementary income for these farmers, who in turn do their part to protect the Amazon forests.There is no form of child or slave labor involved throughout the entire process. No genetic modification takes place, and no hormones are used.


Traces was an innovative Italian-Brazilian project which looked at the social and environmental impacts resulting from the carbon footprint. It was a collaboration between Osklen, E-institute, and The Italian Ministry for the Environment; Land and Sea of Italy. This team of international experts studied the supply chain of six e- fabrics (sustainable materials developed by Osklen through E- institute) from the sourcing of the raw materials to the products end-of-life. They surveyed the social and environmental consequences, and identified possible mitigation measures to minimize impacts further.

The results indicated that Osklen’s sustainable models contributed to the improvement of tens of thousands of worker’s quality of life, as well as to the preservation of Amazon forests. Thanks to this project, mitigation measures were implemented in the parts of the supply chain where there were the highest carbon footprints. One example is the Pirarucu fishing community in Mexiana, the Marajo archipelago in the Amazon region. The skin of the Pirarucu fish was one of the six e-fabrics that was studied. By replacing highly pollutant diesel power with solar energy, the community was able to obtain a clean and free energy source.


The carbon footprint of one Pirarucu Bag is 38.674gr CO2eq, while for the total production the GHG emissions have a value of 3.513kg CO2eq.
